A foundation in emergency response
Turn the desire to help into practical skills.
Learn to approach an emergency with a clear plan: assess the situation, recognize care needs, and practice essential response skills using EMS equipment.
The Certified First Responder (CFR) track is centered on New York. It builds an emergency care foundation at a level below EMT, with scenario walkthroughs, knowledge checks, reviews, and preparation for sponsor-administered evaluations.
Certification requirements: Final dates, certification fees, and examination arrangements depend on the selected course track. New York State CFR requirements remain subject to the approved course sponsor and Certified Instructor Coordinator (CIC).

What is the difference between EMR and CFR?
Both build a foundation in emergency care below the EMT level. The main differences are the certification pathway and the course schedule.
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
A 63-hour, two-week, in-person course following the Connecticut pathway toward National Registry (NREMT) certification. Course completion alone does not grant national certification, which has separate eligibility, examination, and skills requirements.
New York State does not recognize EMR as an EMS certification. Choose this course if you are pursuing the Connecticut pathway toward national EMR certification.
Certified First Responder (CFR)
A New York-centered program spanning four months and 16 weeks, with approximately 60 hours of instruction. Participants must be age 16 or older.
Choose CFR if your goal is the New York responder pathway. NYS certification requirements, fees, and examination arrangements remain subject to the approved sponsor and Certified Instructor Coordinator. This program does not include the Connecticut pathway to NREMT.
Confirm your intended certification pathway and course requirements with Balati EMS before enrolling.
