Choose your training path
What is the difference between EMR and CFR?
Both build a foundation in emergency care below the EMT level. The main differences are the certification pathway and the course schedule.
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
A 63-hour, two-week, in-person course following the Connecticut pathway toward National Registry (NREMT) certification. Course completion alone does not grant national certification, which has separate eligibility, examination, and skills requirements.
New York State does not recognize EMR as an EMS certification. Choose this course if you are pursuing the Connecticut pathway toward national EMR certification.
Certified First Responder (CFR)
A New York-centered program spanning four months and 16 weeks, with approximately 60 hours of instruction. Participants must be age 16 or older.
Choose CFR if your goal is the New York responder pathway. NYS certification requirements, fees, and examination arrangements remain subject to the approved sponsor and Certified Instructor Coordinator. This program does not include the Connecticut pathway to NREMT.

How long is the EMR course?
The course is planned as 63 hours delivered over two weeks of in-person instruction.
Does the course offer an NREMT pathway?
The EMR course follows the Connecticut pathway to NREMT.
What is the comparable credential in New York?
New York’s comparable credential is Certified First Responder, or CFR. Balati EMS offers a 16-week CFR program for students age 16 and older. It does not include a Connecticut pathway to NREMT. Explore the CFR training page for program and enrollment details.
